Christian Word Definition: Religion

The definition of Religion is as follows:

the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods. Oxford Dictionaries

a cultural system of behaviors and practices, world views, sacred texts, holy places, ethics, and societal organization that relate humanity to what an anthropologist has called “an order of existence”.  Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They knew me from the first, if they were willing to testify, that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

Acts 26:5 (NKJV)

Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

Acts 9:1-2 (NRSV)

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6 (NIV2011)

This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

Ephesians 4:17-24 (NKJV)

As you can readily see, Christianity (the Way) is not a religion. Christianity is a way of life that is to be lived day by day. Through the study of God’s word (the Bible) and prayer through the Holy Spirit, each one of us will reach the righteousness and holiness that will bring us back to the original state; in the image of God. Genesis 1:27

Walk Always in His Ways

And if you keep all these commandments and do them, which I command you today, to love the LORD your God and to walk always in His ways, then you shall add three more cities for yourself besides these three.

Deuteronomy 19:9 (NKJV)

I was 45 years old when I turned my life over to God. I had lived my life rather loosely and made bad choices all the time. There were a lot of small sins to be forgiven, but there were more “big” sins that were forgiven.

The biggest challenge wasn’t learning to be a Christian, I had to learn to live a Christian life. The hardest part of this was learning to live without sin in my life.

I didn’t have to stop everything I was doing, I just had to learn how to put everything in a position for it to serve God.

I still drive a car, I just don’t drive it to bars anymore, instead, I now use the car to go to work, to take my children to school, to go to church, etc.

I didn’t give up my computer that I was using to find bad things, I simply re-trained my computer to do good. During the pandemic, I use my computer to watch church programs, because I can’t go to a brick and mortar church. I use my computer to do good by writing these blogs that are seen worldwide and will help people of all ages.

God didn’t intend to make the Hebrew people into mini gods, He wanted them to use the commands He had given them to enjoy life with Him. God had not asked them to give unrealistic things to Him, He simply wanted to change their lives for the better.

The people of Israel thought they had to make a monetary statement, or a grand gesture, or a physical declaration. That was never God’s intent. God simply wanted them to act the way He acted. God wanted them to walk the same way he walked.

“If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”

John 14:15-17 (NKJV)

Being a Christian does not mean you have to be a priest or a nun. It simply means you must walk as Christ walked. Once you become a believer, you will also become a disciple. You gain nothing by reading the bible 24/7. You gain nothing by memorizing the bible. You gain nothing by going around calling out sinners. That is not what God wants you to do.

God wants us to look like Him, walk through this world as He would walk and that means we need to study the bible with God. By studying the bible in a quiet place and listening to every verse of scripture, you will also hear (in your heart) what God wants you to know about that verse. Remember, satan recited scripture to Christ, what we must do is live the scripture.

If we live the scripture, we are doing something satan can’t do. If we live the scripture, we are showing the world through our actions what God has done in our lives. By living the scripture, we are not just giving a testimony, we are giving the world a glimpse of God (John 14:7-9).

Beware of people who think they must demonstrate their righteousness in public, people who give up living to show people they are righteous. People who use the bible to disgrace others in public. All these people are religious. That is not what God wants. God wants those who are humble at heart and thus look like God.

Christianity is not a religion, it’s a way of life. AMEN!!
